Slovenia Italy Snow

Wow, it is going off in Slovenia / Italy this year. You always hear how Europe either gets the snow or doesn't get the snow. This year they are getting it huge! Kanin/Bovec is sort of near (maybe 1 hour drive) from Sarah's home town, Santa Croce - Trieste, Italy.

Many of these ski areas get an average of 80-100 inches per year (if they are lucky). Sarah and David (Sarah's brother) can correct me if I'm wrong on that. Keep in mind, some years the ski areas over there barely have enough snow to open then three years later the snow comes huge. You just never know.

Kanin/Bovec is an area that Sarah and I will drive near or even hike near every couples of years (I really don't know where Chris is, when I'm driving by there every year... with him!!!Sarah). This picture below is from a hike this Fall from Sella Nevea. We biked over this pass after our Italian wedding with Charlie and Mandy Evans (getting some snow on our way up, in September & freezing my feet on the way down! I guess I liked it though... I'm still biking with my crazy husband!). In the picture you can see the ski runs coming down the Italian side. Over on the other side of that mountain is the town of Bovec/Kanin in Slovenia.

Now here is a link to the English site of Kanin Bovec. Click here

It says, "FRIDAY, 12th of December. As a result of the snow storm that cought KANIN in the past 48-hours the snow level raised to the December record high of 530 centimeters.

Due to enormous amount of snow on the ski-center area and bad weather forecast, we've decided to reschedule the opening of ski-season to the second half of next week."

530 centimeters is 212 inches depth. Yikes. They can't even open due to TOO much snow.

They have some Slovenian from Monday Dec. 15th.

David or Sarah......help with the translation here. I think it says 600cm now, so that is 240 inch depth!

Danes zjutraj je debelina snežne odeje v osrednjem delu smučišča (okrepčevalnica Prestreljenik, 2202 m) presegla za ta čas rekordnih 600 cm.
Ogromne količine snega in slabo vreme prelagajo načrtovani datum odprtja smučišča. Upoštevaje vremensko napoved in neutrudno delo naše ekipe na smučišču odprtje smučišča načrtujemo ob koncu tedna

[a.k.a.: This morning has the depth of the snow in the middle of the slopes (by the Prestreljenik restaurant, at 2202 mt) surpassed the 600 cm record for this time.
Too much snow and bad weather are postponing the planned opening day of the ski resort. Considering the weather forecast and the work of our untired team on the slopes, we're planning on opening by this week-end.] Holy-Crapoly!!!!

BTW: if anybody is familiar with the "Narnia Cronichles-Prince Caspian" (or smth like that)... this is the area where part of the movie was done... the bright-green super cool color river is our river Soca!!! Sarah :)

Take a load of this picture. The base terminal of this ski lift is buried. Ouch. (Well, better the lift then ME! Last time I was up on the Kanin with my brother and our friends for our ski-instructor test... by the end of the day... they buried me in the snow!!!

I gotta admit: although I was wearing just my ski pants and my sports-bra... it was quite refreshing in the scorching May sun! :>

Deep snow

How about this one. The snow groomer is almost over that building with a drift of snow. Now look at the picture below and where the chairlift is in both of these pictures.

(He-he! The chairlift where one of our kids in our ski team fall in the safety net at unloading time. He was like a caught fish, but didn't slow him down a bit. He was really a little earth-quake. NOPE! It wasn't me. At least not this time.)

David or Stojan, Is THAT the same building ??

From their marketing website

Snowing hard in Vail at the moment (7:00am) Sarah is still sleeping but we'll be snowmobiling today for sure. We'll update with snowmobile pictures later tonight. You Betcha!!! I'm going out with the guys!!! ...I told Chris they'll take care of me and he doesn't "have" to come too, but he wouldn't listen. I really don't know why?!?

Sarah's final comment:
